Guests and Everyday Ceremonies

While this group of guests were having breakfast at Bhanuswari Resort & Spa...

The wife of the resort's Balinese Hindu priest was making offerings and prayers in the lobby.

Unfortunately, the small temple rests at a height more appropriate for her husband. She is quite a bit shorter than he is, so she relies on a lobby chair to get up and down.

Cooking Lesson

A guest who is currently living in Seoul, Korea decided to take his first-ever cooking class while staying at Bhanuswari Resort & Spa.

Here, he demonstrates how to roll and fold a banana leaf around a filling of spiced fish. The package is then steamed for about 20 minutes.

While eating the results, he said that it was all delicious, and that he plans to cook Balinese cuisine for his friends when he returns. Lucky friends!

Friendly Neighbors Take Culture Classes at Bhanuswari Resort & Spa

Just up the hill from Bhanuswari Resort & Spa, a Dutch couple built a villa. (See it at http://balirelax.blogspot.com/2006/10/new-neighbors-near-bhanuswari-resort.html) A couple of weeks ago, a brother brought his 3 girls for their first trip to Bali.

Though they stayed at their own villa, they took advantage of nearby Bhanuswari Resort & Spa for many of their meals and activities. Since they were only staying for 6 days, they didn't want to hire a cook. And a short walk (less than 5 minutes) brought them to Bhanuswari's 3-4 star meals, at 2-3 star prices (May is still "low" season).

With no swimming pool at their villa, they were still able to swim - by joining the "Swim Club" at Bhanuswari. For a small daily fee, they could use the salt-water pool, a pool towel, and get a juice or soft drink.
And when they got tired of shopping in nearby Ubud (or maybe it was Peter who got tired, rather than his teenage daughters!), they took a wood-carving class in the resort's lobby.

Balinese Cooking Lesson

A family from Belgium stayed at Bhanuswari Resort & Spa (www.BhanuswariUbud.com) last week.

One of their activities was a hands-on cooking lesson for the children.

The happy family ready to enjoy the yummy results of the lesson!

Crispy Duck

A new set menu of Crispy Duck is offered upon request at

Bhanuswari Resort & Spa http://www.bhanuswariresort.com/.

I tried it for the first time this week, and it is wonderful! The duck is very tender (only the skin is crisp) and the flavor is delicious.

Tea Party at the Villa Pool

To celebrate the completion of the salt-water pool at the first villa,
there was a tea party with a difference.

Some guests were in swimsuits, and the tea cakes were Balinese -

things like sticky rice, steamed in a banana leaf, with a filling of shredded coconut and palm sugar.

Sahira even agreed to model for some shots of the villa pool!

Check out Bhanuswari Resort & Spa's delicious (and beautiful!) foods

The menu includes dishes from around the globe. Here's just a sampling:

Omelet breakfast.

Bubur Ayam - rice porridge breakfast with chicken and fried shallots.

Three Colour Salad with roasted bell peppers and cheese.

Two Colour Soup - Ginger Carrot in one half of the bowl, Potato Leek in the other half.

Crispy Calimari salad.

For vegetarians (and others!), Zucchini & Eggplant Roulade with Mozarella over tomato sauce.

Baked stuffed mushrooms, topped with cheese.

Balinese Chicken (Pepes Ayam) cooked in banana leaf, served with roasted eggplant. What's the pointy green thing in the middle? That's steamed white rice wearing its "party hat" (at least, that's what I call it!)

Pizza with chicken and spinach.

Tuna Steak with teriyaki sauce and mashed potatoes.

And a dessert...

Homemade Apple Pie.

A Field Trip - to Buy Orchids

I joined a trip up a mountain yesterday to buy orchids at the source, Bedugul. So of course, I had to take some photos of the stalls and people.

Fashions ("Drupadi Collection) for sale next to a small Muslim restaurant specializing in meatballs (bakso) and soup (soto).

Spices, packed and ready to go - including Vanilla bean.

A woman carrying her bananas on her head.

An especially tempting fruit & vegetable display.

Assorted wind chimes and mobiles.

Adorable little girls (and they know it, too!)

A mischievous little boy playing with the orchids.

And the view coming back down the mountain, taken from a car FULL of plants - at least 20 orchids of 2 different types, lime trees, and celery plants. I had 3-4 orchids and 2 celery plants between my feet because we ran out of space!

Sample menu items at Bhanuswari

Yesterday there was a taste test of some of the dishes and juices the Chef is considering for the menu. All were very good - and I think they photograph well in their custom designed dinnerware, too!

Ginger/carrot soup (a personal favorite of mine)

Green curry chicken with vegetables

Mango Mustard & Green Tea Sorbet

I've been trying out various local restaurants. Today I had lunch at Lamak (http://www.lamakbali.com/). They have a variety of items as well as a variety of dining areas, including an air-conditioned room upstairs. The air-conditioning is a relative rarity in restaurants in the Ubud area, where most are located in open-air pavilions.

The architecture is rather unusual – check out the “Image Gallery” on the right-hand menu of the restaurant site for photos. The music is eclectic – some jazz, some new-age type.

Two of the more interesting items I consumed were a Nuevo Cubano sandwich with Mango Mustard (a good combination of sweet and tart), and a Green Tea Sorbet for dessert - not too heavy, not a real strong flavor, so a nice way to end a meal in a tropical climate!
